Heavy Rain creator speaks on the challenges of game development
Gamers will know that Heavy Rain is like no other title in the industry today. This interactive drama doesn't stop if one of the main characters dies, and every scene will turn out differently depending on the actions you take within.
But what kind of work goes into making such a unique game? We asked the developer Quantic Dream's boss and the mastermind behind the game, David Cage. He said: "It's very hard work especially because there are no rules for these types of games. It's all drama and there are very few references in the interactive environment.
"If you work on a shooter there are so many shooters out there that if you refer to them you'll know where you're better or where your worse," Cage continued. "But here in this thing we have more references in the movie industry to try to guess if it's a good story or are these characters believable? Will anybody guess who the killer is before the end of the story? These were our real references and our real questions so this was a big challenge."
He added: "The other challenge was, of course, the amount of work involved. It's really a year in writing and it's also about having a left brain and a right brain at the same time you have to a lot of ideas for your characters but at the same time you also need to be very organised as a writer to keep track of all the conditions and variations of the story and try to make sure that no matter how many branches or variations you create they are all of the same quality, there's no good branch or bad branch to the story telling. Those were just some of the challenges."
Heavy Rain recently scooped up BAFTA awards for both Story and Soundtrack, which are well deserved. You can listen to the whole interview with David Cage up top.
